120 Summer 07.10.2009
This summer I started shooting more 120 film again. A while back I pulled up a bunch of old 120 portraits I had shot for P8NT (the magazine I worked for from 1999-2005) and it really got me psyched about shooting larger format film (and film in general). So I broke out my old Holga and my Seagull Twin Lens Reflex and got cracking.
I think there’s something really intimate about a Twin Lens shot, something about having to compose the shot backward, looking down into a hole in the camera. The fixed lens and the nice f2.8 aperture smooth out the background and, despite being a “cheep” camera the glass is crisp and the image sharp – which lets the larger format negative really make moves.

I also shot a bunch of stuff on my Holga, which I’ve had since the late ’90. We were required to shoot on them and only them for about a month in my first photo class in College and I really loved it and am sad that after over a decade I finally broke it. There are some of the last images the plastic fantastic took before my messenger bag ate it.
