Glitches – Photographs with broken digital cameras 20.05.2009
For the last few years (like six) I’ve been carrying around an old Canon Elph digital camera. In my back pocket, my messenger bag, random backpacks, pretty much anyplace I could shove it to make sure I always had some way to take pictures. And I didn’t treat it very well, dropping it, spilling things on it, generally treating it like something that was one step from a disposable.
So naturally when it started dieing a few months ago I was surprised. But when I saw the pictures it started taking – not every frame – not every time, just once in a while, I was really excited. I really love damaged and flawed camera’s (I did my senior show on a LOMO and still have the same Holga I’ve had for over ten years) and it’s exciting to see that come over to the sterile world of digital.
None of these images have been worked over in photoshop. This is how they came out of the camera – ghostly, distorted, looking like something taken from a Korean horror film.
