Mid-April Updates 20.04.2009

So I’ve actually been pretty busy all April, but just haven’t had a chance to update the work in progress blog. Here’s what’s been up.

Did a job for Fare Magazine, shooting the Dunn Bros Coffee in Racine Wisconsin. It’s in an amazing old building and they do all their roasting in house, right in the middle of the cafe. The photos will be featured in the May issue of Fare.

After that I ended up in Milwaukee for the Milwaukee Messenger Invitational (MMI), where I ended up shooting more of the after party than the race proper (the plan had been to shoot the race and not do it, but that didn’t happen and I ended up hauling all over Milwaukee with Shaggy, Augie, Allison, and Blaze).

Then I ended up in California for the inaugural event of the new USPL Paintball League (featuring much of the staff of the now defunct NPPL). I was shooting for Transcend as well as a few freelance clients.

I’m about to shoot two short pieces for Momentum Magazine this week before I head back to LA to shoot the inaugural UWL event. I’m actually pretty surprised to be getting any paintball work at the moment – the industry is hurting and the value of still photography has plummeted in the last couple years due to some photographers who essentially give their work away, undercutting those of us who actually need to pay the bills via freelance and client work.

On that note I’ve also been working the archives for P8NT Magazine, where I worked as the Photographic Editor for six years (1999-2005). Chris Hass, the former Editor/Publisher, is about to move to DC to take a job with the DNC after his successful work on the Obama campaign last year, so I had to pick up several hundred binders and move them from his apartment to mine. I’ve been, for a while now, diving into that massive body of work in the hopes of putting together some kind of comprehensive book. It’s difficult to look at sometimes, as I can viscerally see my growth and progress as a photographer (and keep running into photos of the team that did the magazine – and we all look younger than I can believe we ever looked).

One of the beauties of P8NT was we shot on film, did a lot of black and white work and experimented with different formats of film and processing (something that you don’t see so much in the all digital gig after gig full auto work of paintball photography).
